The New Man: An Interpretation of Some Parables and Miracles of Christ

by Maurice Nicoll

A psychological interpretation of the parables and miracles of Christ by Maurice Nicoll, a student of both Gurdjieff and Ouspensky. Nicoll argues that all sacred writings contain an inner meaning concealed beneath the literal words — and that the Gospels are fundamentally psychological documents concerned with the possibility of man's inner evolution, which they call rebirth. The parables are understood as deliberate instruments designed to lift the level of understanding from the literal to the psychological. Nicoll reads the commandments, miracles, and parables not as historical or moral prescriptions but as precise descriptions of inner states and inner work. The book draws on Fourth Way ideas to illuminate the esoteric content of Christianity, showing that concepts such as rebirth, the kingdom of heaven, and the new man refer to specific stages of psychological development available to anyone who comes into contact with genuine teaching on the subject.
