48 Exercises
A three-page handwritten list of forty-eight practical exercises for inner work in the Gurdjieff/Fourth Way tradition, reproduced here as an archival preservation photocopy (original material restricted). The list is framed by the instruction that self-observation and non-identification come 'first and last,' and proceeds through efforts such as realizing 'I have a body,' observing the organism's mechanicality and habitual reactions, having the formulatory center report the organism's behavior to the 'I,' triangulating one's acts with a three-fold purpose, finding the chief feature and the essential wish, making gratuitous efforts, going against inclination, and 'peeling the onion' of one's attitudes toward life.
Several exercises apply the system's cosmology directly to daily perception — relating each object to its place in the great octave, applying the law of the octave to one's own impulses in order to catch the interval at 'mi,' realizing man as a cosmos in miniature, and becoming aware of the operations of the sub-centers within the intellectual, emotional, and moving centers. The vocabulary (formulatory center, non-identification, chief feature, constructive imagination) reflects the teaching as transmitted through Gurdjieff's American pupils, and the document reads as working notes for a group rather than a published text; no author is named on the manuscript.
